TORCH TIP CLEANERS & NOZZLE CLEANING SETS
A clogged nozzle gives a ragged, yellow flame, burns more butane or acetylene than it should, and slows every job it touches. A tip cleaner set costs less than a single cartridge - and it’s the fastest fix for a blowtorch or oxy-fuel nozzle that has lost its clean blue cone. Keep one in the kit and clean as part of the job.
Clean when the flame cone is uneven but the orifice is round and undamaged. Replace when the orifice is oval, split, or cleaning no longer restores a sharp cone - a worn nozzle wastes fuel no matter how well it’s cleaned.

CLEANING A NOZZLE IN FOUR STEPS
- Cool the torch and take the nozzle off. Never clean a nozzle that is still hot - the wire can bite and score the orifice.
- Pick the smallest wire in the set that slides in without force. If you have to push, the wire is too big.
- Draw it through once or twice, then clear the seat and blow the loose material out. Do not ream, twist or drill - an enlarged orifice cannot be put back.
- Refit, light up in open air and read the cone. A steady blue cone with a sharp inner point means it is done.
QUESTIONS
What does a tip cleaner set actually contain?
A row of round files, each a known diameter, so you can match the wire to the orifice instead of guessing. The 12-size set covers every nozzle in this range; the wire you want is the smallest one that enters freely.
Can I use steel wire or a drill bit instead?
No. Steel wire scores the orifice on the way through, and a drill cuts metal you cannot put back. A nozzle with an enlarged or out-of-round hole never holds a clean flame again, so the cheap fix turns into a replacement.
How often should a nozzle be cleaned?
When the flame cone turns ragged or yellow at the tip - that is the signal, not the calendar. On a cartridge blowtorch used daily that usually means every few weeks; on an oxy rig, clean whenever the cone shows its first hint of yellow.
When is cleaning a waste of time?
When the orifice is oval, split or visibly enlarged, when the nozzle has already been drilled by somebody else, or when the thread no longer pulls it down square on the seat. That is wear, and only replacement restores the flame.
